Why a Warehouse in Indore Could Be the Missing Link in Your National Distribution Network

Fourmativ9 October 20265 min read

Poorly positioned distribution hubs can increase freight costs, extend transit times, and fragment inventory across locations. With post-GST supply-chain consolidation encouraging businesses to move beyond state-level warehousing models, manufacturers and distributors can evaluate larger regional hubs that connect production centres with regional markets and last-mile networks while reducing unnecessary transport and handling.

Indore’s location within the Pithampur industrial belt positions it as a compelling regional distribution hub for businesses serving Central and Western India. Major cities such as Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Mumbai and Pune are all within 600 km of Indore and are reachable within approximately 12 hours by road

This connectivity, combined with the region’s industrial base, makes Indore worth considering when designing regional warehousing and distribution networks.

FOURWRD Indore is a national Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) spanning approximately 255 acres, developed under a public-private partnership model through an SPV involving National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and MPIDC, as part of the MMLP programme under Bharatmala Pariyojana and aligned with PM Gati Shakti.

The development brings together warehousing, cargo handling and container logistics infrastructure, with planned rail connectivity, to support a more integrated approach to freight movement.

FMCG, e-commerce and 3PL companies serving Central and Western India can evaluate its role as a regional distribution hub, while EXIM shippers can assess the advantages of inland container and customs infrastructure for coordinating cargo movement between inland operations and seaports.

Why Indore Deserves a Place in Your Distribution Strategy

The Pithampur industrial ecosystem is a significant manufacturing hub, with more than 1,450 active industrial units across approximately 265 hectares (655 acres) , including approximately 50 large and mega-scale industries. A further 4,300 acres are earmarked for future industrial growth. This creates a relevant catchment for automotive, pharmaceutical, chemical and other industrial supply chains.

Indore’s location within Central India offers road connectivity to major commercial markets across Western, Central and Northern India. For businesses planning regional distribution, these distances provide a starting point for evaluating market coverage and transit requirements.

Road distances and driving times from Indore:

  • Ahmedabad: Approximately 380–400 km, around 5.5–6.5 hours.
  • Nagpur: Approximately 445–450 km, around 7–8 hours.
  • Mumbai: Approximately 580–600 km, around 10 hours.
  • Pune: Approximately 600–610 km, around 10–11 hours.
  • Hyderabad: Approximately 800–850 km, around 13–15 hours.
  • Delhi: Approximately 900 km, around 14–16 hours.

This existing industrial base creates opportunities across several supply chains:

  • FMCG and retail: Regional warehousing and distribution to serve consumer markets across Central and Western India.
  • Automotive and manufacturing: Pithampur is a major automotive and manufacturing hub, generating logistics demand for vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, and industrial cargo.
  • Pharmaceuticals and chemicals: The wider Indore-Pithampur belt has an established pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing presence, creating demand for suitable warehousing and distribution infrastructure.
  • EXIM cargo: FOURWRD Indore’s ready ICD is expected to commence operations soon, providing inland container and customs infrastructure for businesses moving export-import cargo through port-linked supply chains.

FOURWRD Indore strengthens this proposition through direct access to Mhow-Neemuch Road via an existing 30-metre right-of-way, with dedicated entry and exit lanes for logistics traffic. Access from Indore’s upcoming six-lane Western Ring Road is also part of the development plan, while the proposed rail infrastructure is intended to connect with the Tihi-Dahod broad-gauge railway line. Its ICD is ready and expected to commence operations soon.

Why Multimodality Matters at Scale

For large freight volumes, transport, storage and cargo handling need to work together.

Road transport offers flexibility for collection and delivery, while rail suits high-volume, long-distance freight where route availability, handling costs and transit requirements align.

Bringing both modes together with warehousing and cargo-handling facilities at one site helps businesses coordinate freight movement and onward distribution more efficiently.

At FOURWRD Indore, the infrastructure plan includes Grade-A warehousing, an Inland Container Depot (ICD), a Domestic Private Freight Terminal (PFT), and dedicated bulk and break-bulk cargo facilities.

It includes approximately 20 acres for bulk and break-bulk cargo, five rail siding lines with expansion capacity, and two dedicated bulk and break-bulk sidings with further expansion provision. The PFT includes dedicated freight yards and integrated warehousing and processing areas.

For businesses managing large cargo volumes, multimodal infrastructure offers three key advantages:

  • Fewer handoffs: Bringing warehousing and cargo-handling facilities together simplifies coordination across logistics operations.
  • The right mode for each shipment: Businesses can select road or rail based on shipment volume, route, delivery timelines and handling requirements.
  • Lower cost per tonne at scale: Rail offers cost advantages for suitable high-volume freight, depending on route, handling charges and total transport costs.

What FOURWRD Indore Brings to the Table

FOURWRD Indore is a nearly 255-acre multimodal logistics park developed under a public-private partnership model. Key infrastructure is already operational, including the Inland Container Depot (ICD), two warehouses and truck parking facilities.

Phase 2 will expand the development with additional warehouses, a trade centre by Exhicon, a Holiday Inn Express hotel by IHG, and rail connectivity, further strengthening the park’s integrated logistics and commercial ecosystem.

1. Grade-A Warehousing

FOURWRD Indore’s Warehouse 1 is designed for high-density pallet storage and heavy material-handling operations, with specifications suited to demanding logistics requirements.

Key specifications include:

  • 12-metre eaves height for high-density pallet storage.
  • 20.5-metre concrete dock aprons for trailer manoeuvrability.
  • 14-metre-wide internal roads to support multi-axle trailer movement.
  • FM2-compliant M35-grade flooring, supporting a 6-tonne-per-square-metre uniformly distributed load (UDL) and 7-tonne point loads.
  • 4% polycarbonate skylights for natural daylighting.
  • STP and IGBC certification as specified in the project leaflet.

Phase 1 is fully leased, with Apollo Supply Chain operating at the development. Businesses seeking additional space can contact our team to discuss Phase 2 availability and leasing options.

2. Bulk and Break-Bulk Cargo Handling

The development allocates approximately 20 acres for bulk and break-bulk storage. Dedicated zones with rail-side alignment are planned to support loading and unloading, with segregated circulation to reduce conflicts with container operations. The brochure identifies iron and steel, fertilisers and food grains among the commodities handled.

3. Inland Container Depot (ICD)

FOURWRD Indore’s purpose-built ICD, designed around container yards and bonded warehouses for EXIM operations, with customs facilities and rail-linked container infrastructure, is ready and will commence operations soon.Once operational, it will support shippers in coordinating inland cargo movement with port-linked supply chains.

4. Domestic Private Freight Terminal (PFT)

FOURWRD Indore has a Domestic PFT with dedicated yards for point-to-point domestic freight, integrated warehousing and cargo-processing areas, and direct access to rail and road networks. It is designed to support domestic container and non-container freight operations within the wider logistics development.

5. Road Access and Planned Rail Connectivity

FOURWRD Indore has direct access from Mhow-Neemuch Road via an existing 30-metre right-of-way, dedicated entry and exit lanes, and planned access from Indore’s upcoming six-lane Western Ring Road.

The proposed rail infrastructure includes approximately 20 acres for rail sidings and platforms, five siding lines with expansion capacity, and two dedicated sidings for bulk and break-bulk cargo.
